Application Guidelines for Downtown & Village Tax Credit

Vermont’s Downtown and Village Center tax credit program is one of the primary benefits of Downtown and Village Center designation, and supports revitalization in community centers across the state.

In January 2021, a special round of $700,000 in state income tax credits will be competitively available to projects that enhance the historic character and improve building safety of older and historic commercial and community buildings in these designated communities. The credits support general rehabilitation work, code compliance work, and façade improvements, and may be combined with the federal program.

Applications for the next round of tax credits are due Monday January 4, 2021 and the Vermont Downtown Board will make is allocation decisions by the end of January 2021. See the attached program guidelines and application.

Note: If you applied unsuccessfully to the program in July 2020, we encourage you to re-submit your application for the additional funding now available. You may re-submit your previous application and/or submit a updated and improved application.

I encourage all applicants to reach out to me with any questions about the program or the application. There is also a pre-recorded webinar available on our website which covers program basics, the scoring criteria, and how to compile a strong application for those looking for a competitive edge.

Applications must be submitted electronically to or to:
