Enforcement:

Shelburne Police Department has five officers specifically trained in Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Enforcement and combined have conducted approximately 195 inspections on Commercial Motor Carriers during 2006.  Through these inspections 440 violations were detected, including violations for brake problems, overweight violations as well as log book violations.  These offenses were documented and often the vehicles and operators were put out of service until the violations could be corrected.  The enforcement also helped to remove tired operators and unsafe vehicles from the roadways before any collision occurred.

Our CMV officers have participated in over 10 joint inspections with the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles Inspectors in various locations throughout the State of Vermont, the largest one of these being “Road Check” which occurred in Guilford, VT.  This year, officers have been involved in assisting Vermont State, South Burlington, Hinesburg and Williston Police Departments with commercial motor vehicle problems, i.e. commercial motor vehicle collisions and over-weights violations.  Our CMV Team’s objectives are to have safe commercial vehicles on our roads and to reduce the number of commercial motor vehicle collisions

Training:

In 2006, our five certified CMV officers attended 8 hours of training regarding recent changes to both State and Federal CMV laws.  This training was held at the Shelburne Police Department, and was instructed by a VT DMV Officer.  Our officers attended this training alongside other DMV officers.  We believe that this mutual training allows us to more effectively work with outside agencies building teamwork and allowing for more efficient operations when working on the roadside with DMV officers.

Public Education:

During our participation with “2006 Road Check”, the attending officers disseminated information and flyers on the new commercial motor vehicle laws handed down by the Federal Government. It is our hope that by providing this information, Commercial Drivers will be more cognizant of the need for safety on our highways.
