TIPS FOR TTY/TDD CALLERS: Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates that Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) provided emergency telephone services to persons with disabilities, which is direct and equal to services provided to others. To accomplish this level of service, the Vermont Enhanced 9-1-1 Board has trained all 9-1-1 Call-takers to recognize and handle teletypewriters (TTY) or telecommunications devices for the deaf (TDD). TTY/TDD Calls should perform the following: ALL OF VERMONT'S 9-1-1 CALL-TAKERS CAN DETECT INCOMING TTY CALLS ONE OF THREE WAYS: - PSAP equipment automatically detects Baudot tones initiated by the TTY caller depressing the space bar three times. The PSAP TTY screen becomes active and the PSAP initiates greeting to the TTY caller.
- The ASCII carrier is automatically detected and the PSAP initiates a TTY session.
- A TTY session will be initiated by the PSAP if a silent 9-1-1 call is detected at the PSAP. The PSAP equipment automatically launches a TTY session by sending a Baudot greeting to the caller after a predefined period of time - usually 12 seconds.
