911 Tips for TTY Callers:

All 9-1-1 Call-takers at Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in Vermont are trained and equipped to detect incoming TTY calls. The TTY caller's location, callback number and local emergency service providers are immediately displayed on the Call-taker's screen. The 9-1-1 Call-taker will be able to communicate with a TTY Caller either by using the PSAP keyboard or by using predefined function keys to send pre-programmed messages to the TTY Caller. The Enhanced 9-1-1 Board has set up routine TTY practice sessions in conjunction with Vermont TTY users. ALL OF VERMONT'S 9-1-1 CALL-TAKERS CAN DETECT INCOMING TTY CALLS ONE OF THREE WAYS: - PSAP equipment automatically detects Baudot tones initiated by the TTY caller depressing the space bar three times. The PSAP TTY screen becomes active and the PSAP initiates greeting to the TTY caller.
- The ASCII carrier is automatically detected and the PSAP initiates a TTY session.
- A TTY session will be initiated by the PSAP if a silent 9-1-1 call is detected at the PSAP. The PSAP equipment automatically launches a TTY session by sending a Baudot greeting to the caller after a predefined period of time - usually 12 seconds.
