EMS Training

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Initially, without any previous emergency medical training you would start as an observer (a fourth crew member) on the ambulance, unless you are interested in driving. There are a couple of checklists to complete before going out on your first emergency call.

Emergency Medical Classes offered in this area include the following: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) American Heart Association and American Red Cross offer CPR and AED training. These programs are designed to give you the confidence to respond in an emergency situation with skills that can save a life.  Find out more about CPR and AED training programs at the following links: American Heart Association American Red Cross

First Responder: This training is offered to individuals at least 16 years of age or older. This is a 40 hour course (e.g. Introduction to Emergency Care, Human Body, Bleeding, Shock and Soft Tissue Injuries etc.). CPR certification is a prerequisite. EMT-Basic: This training is for individuals at least 18 years of age. This is a 110 hour course offered throughout the year. The EMT courses are usually taught at UVM in Burlington during the evening hours. This is the entry level for pre-hospital care in Vermont and includes assessment and treatment skills in both medical and trauma related emergencies. EMT-Intermediate: EMT-Intermediate is the next level of certification after the EMT-Basic and the highest level of care provided by Shelburne Rescue. This program includes advance assessment skills, medication administration, interavenous therapy, and advanced airway management.
