 2007 AWARDS AND RECOGNITION 2007 LIFESAVER OF THE YEAR AWARD: Congratulations to Sgt. Allen Fortin for receiving the 2007 Lifesaver of the Year Award from the Governor's Highway Safety Program. Sgt. Fortin received this award on June 12, 2007 at the annual "Highway Heroes" luncheon. The award is given to those dedicated to highway safety. As the Traffic Safety Coordinator, Sgt. Fortin has developed the Shelburne Police Department's traffic safety programs and been involved in multiple programs sponsored by the Governor's Highway Safety Program. 2006 AWARDS AND RECOGNITION TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ENFORCEMENT AWARDS: The Shelburne Police Department internally acknowledged the efforts of one officer in two categories. Officer Bruce Beuerlein was recognized for his efforts in the field of Traffic Safety and Enforcement, as well as for his efforts in DUI Enforcement. This is the first time since their inception that a single officer has been recognized for their best efforts in both areas. Officer Beuerlein was issued Certificates, and his name will be engraved on two plaques, which hang on the walls of the Shelburne Police Department. These awards have become an annual function at the Shelburne Police Department since their inception in 2002. We feel that continued recognition of officers is essential to our cause. It continues to motivate officers to deliver top quality service while training, assisting the public and when enforcing Vermont Motor Vehicle and Occupant Protection Laws. YEARS OF SERVICE: In 2006, the Town of Shelburne recognized Officer Terri McKnight for her Years of Service. Officer McKnight has worked for the Shelburne Police Department for over 15 years. Over the years Officer McKnight has been a strong advocate of motor vehicle enforcement and Child Car Seat safety. Officer McKnight is a Child Seat Safety Technician and was the first officer to receive the Shelburne Police Department award for her efforts in Traffic Safety and Enforcement. In 2006, the Town of Shelburne recognized Officer Douglas Babcock for his 5 Years of Service to the Shelburne Police Department. Emergency Communications Technician (ECT) Ker Walker was recognized for his 10 Years of Service. ECT Walker is a full-time Call-taker/Dispatcher with the Shelburne Police Department and Communications Center. ECT Walker is the Department's Grant Writer and assists in the administration of the agency's numerous Governors Highway Safety Program funded grants. ECT Walker woks closely with Sgt. Allen Fortin in creating the annual submissions for the Law Enforcement Challenge. SPECIAL RECOGNITION: Officer Terri McKnight also received a Letter of Recognition for her customer service skills in assisting in the installation of a Child Safety Seat. Additionally, Officer McKnight assisted the same citizen weeks later with properly securing a Christmas Tree to his car, alleviating the risk of an unsecured load falling on to the highway. SAVED BY THE BELT AWARD: The Shelburne Police Department initiated it's first Saved by the Belt Award in 2005. This award is given to an individual who was involved in a motor vehicle crash in the Town of Shelburne, was not at fault in the crash, was wearing his/her seatbelt at the time of the crash and sustained minimal or no injuries. This year's recipient, Katrina Nye, was traveling south on Vermont Route 116 near the area of Dubois Corners. A vehicle traveling northbound crossed over the double yellow line, coming into her lane of travel and struck her motor vehicle head-on. Ms. Nye was wearing her seatbelt as she normally does. She did receive injures, however the other operator was not wearing his seatbelt and was fatally injured. Ms. Nye's seatbelt saved her life. LAW ENFORCEMENT CHALLENGE: In 2006, the Shelburne Police Department was awarded First Place in our division, as well as First Place in the State, for our 2005 submission to the Vermont Law Enforcement Challenge. The Department also tied for Third Place in the National Law Enforcement Challenge with the same submission, the first time that we have ever made it to the national level. 2005 AWARDS AND RECOGNITION TRAFFIC SAFETY AND ENFORCEMENT AWARDS: Officer Seth DiSanto was recognized for his efforts in the field of Traffic Safety and Enforcement, while Officer Robert Barrows was recognized for his efforts in DUI Enforcement. Both officers were issued Awards, and their names will be put on two plaques which hang on the walls of the Shelburne Police Department. These awards have become an annual function at the Shelburne Police Department since their inception in 2002. We feel that continued recognition of officers is essential to our cause. Officer Maciejewski has worked for the Shelburne Police Department for over 10 years. The Employee Recognition Award was issued to Maciejewski for his dedication and willingness to assist the Department whenever called upon. Over the years Officer Maciejewski has been a strong advocate of motor vehicle enforcement and Child Car Seat safety. SAVED BY THE BELT AWARD: The Shelburne Police Department initiated it’s first Saved by the Belt Award recognition award in 2005. This year’s recipient, Cheryl Hubbard, was involved in a motor vehicle crash where her vehicle was hit by another vehicle when the operator failed to stop at a stop sign. ECT Walker was recognized for his Cost Saving Efforts, searching, applying and winning many State and Federal Grants. The grants that Ker had written for this recognition was a $125,000 Homeland Security Grant, whose funds would be used to install Mobile Data Computers in the Police Cruisers, allowing for real-time Motor Vehicle, License, NCIC and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) queries. Sgt. Allen Fortin was awarded a $100 Gift Certificate to a Law Enforcement Supply company, as well as a Briefcase bag filled with administrative items, as a thank you for his continued dedication to the Governors Highway Safety Program for inspecting and installing Child Restraint Systems. Sgt. SPECIAL RECOGNITION: In 2003, we were fortunate enough to have two of our officers receive recognition from outside agencies, for their individual contributions in carrying out our traffic safety initiatives. Officer Seth DiSanto was presented with a "Hit of the Month" commendation. This award was presented by Chief James W. Warden at a public Selectboard Meeting. Officer DiSanto was recognized for his quick actions, and accurate use of the Stop Stick device maintained in our cruisers. The Stop Sticks were deployed in front of a fleeing motor vehicle involved in a pursuit. The tires were deflated successfully, and the suspect was apprehended without further danger to the community, thanks in part to the training, quick thinking and actions of Officer DiSanto. The second officer was recognized for his participation in our public education and training efforts. Sgt. Allen Fortin was awarded a Palm Pilot for his continued dedication to the Governors Highway Safety Program for inspecting and installing Child Restraint Systems. Sgt. Fortin placed among some the top officers in the State for the number of Child Seats inspected and installed for parents.
