The Philip Smardon Memorial Cremation Garden Phil Smardon, who served on the Cemetery Commission, was named the State of Vermont Cemetarian of the Year at the Vermont Cemetery Association’s annual meeting in October 1999. The following is an excerpt from the presentation of this award: “Phil has been a Cemetery Commissioner since 1976, a span of 24 uninterrupted years of volunteer service. As the Sexton, he has spent hundreds of hours meeting with residents and funeral home personnel, selling cemetery lots, making out deeds, answering information for those seeking geneaology information and making the path easier for those experiencing the loss of a loved one. In addition, this volunteer position included cemetery equipment purchase, supervising the cemetery personnel and drafting and keeping track of the budget. Any Selectboard member can attest that when Phil came in to present the cemetery budget he had completed his "homework”. A few years ago he envisioned a side hill of the Village Cemetery which was then unusable for conventional burials as an excellent place for a Cremation garden. He used his skills as a landscape architect to create one of the finest Cremation gardens in the state. It serves as a model for many communities who recognize the need for cremation lot areas within their cemeteries. A plaque embedded in stone at the head of the garden reads: “This memorial garden is dedicated to Phil Smardon whose vision and diligence created this special place.”
Excerpts from Cemetery Rules and Regulations Cemetery hours are dawn to dusk. In the winter the cemetery will be closed for a period depending on weather. No funerals on Sundays or holidays. Saddle horses, motorcycles, snowmobiles or trail bikes are not permitted within the grounds. Dogs must be on leash - droppings removed by the owner. No littering. No vaults, no enclosure of lots by fence, hedge or curbing. The following is not allowed: Cutting of flowers that are not your own, boisterous conduct, picnics, climbing on monuments. No glass containers on lots, no firearms except at military funerals, no small objects placed on monuments (these can be hazardous to maintenance personnel. A 'monument lot' allows for one monument extended above ground level and may be erected and placed at the head of the Lot on the center of the lot line. Monuments will be marble or granite, maxium size for a 7'x10' lot will be 4.5' long x 3.5' high. These measurements include the base. Single grave 3.5'x10' lot monument size 24" wide xc 24" high. All monuments must have proper foundation, 5' deep if possible. All will be scheduled and inspected by the commission. Cremation lots are 5'x7' lot. A monument can be 30" long x 24" high. Cremation Garden - No monuments allowed. Only 1'x3' flush markers. Flowers are around the border and the veterans names are on the markers on the flag pole. The flush markers will be granite, colors allowed are: gray, pink, brown, black or green. 3" of crushed stone is required under marker. Ashes will be in a permanent container of granite, marble, copper or acrylic. No planting of trees, shrubs or evergreens as the present lots aren't large enough. Plantings of trees are done by the commission. A 15" wide bed for in ground flowers may be made at the base of the front side of the monument. We recommend a protective edging for the bed. Maintenance of the flower bed is the responsibility of the owners. Artificial flowers may be used October 10th to May 10th.
