FRIENDS OF THE PIERSON LIBRARY
DECEMBER NEWSLETTER, 2007
The Friends of the Pierson Library have completed another successful year. Our membership grows slowly but steadily, and we have many loyal supporters who help with the book sale as well as their donations of books and money. Just a reminder—we are a non-profit organization, and your contributions are tax deductible!
We lost some faithful Friends this year. We will miss their encouragement. We gained some new Friends, too, and patrons enjoyed the planters contributed by Gardenside Nursery until the plants were killed off by frost.
Our book sale was again our best fund-raising event, and with the support of Boy Scouts, parents and friends, Paul Goodrich, his highway department men and unexpected volunteers from the fire department and police, we saved money and moved books in the fastest time ever. We thank Betsy Cieplicki and Recreation Department for their help, also, and Shelburne Supermarket for letting us help ourselves to packing boxes. We ended up with more than $10,000 after expenses, money with which we can help the Library with its many needs.
The Friends enjoyed sponsoring the Halloween PuppeTree program, and the patrons who came to see The Legend of Sleepy Hollow enjoyed the production and the refreshments that went along with it. The Friends always like to support programs of interest to Shelburnites of every age. Suggestions are always welcome.
The Friends have helped with book purchases and with increasing the audio book collection and A/V holdings of the Library which are increasingly popular. We began a program of making available passes to local museums and parks. This we will continue for another year to see which ones are most appealing to our patrons and their families.
We are appreciative of the support from the staff at the Library. They are always so willing to help in whatever way they can. We thank those who sort and pack books all year long, and for those who share the workroom with us with patience and forbearance as September sees the crowding become uncomfortable.
All in all it was a very good year and we thank all who helped make it so.
