                                                  FRIENDS OF THE PIERSON LIBRARY
                                                          Newsletter        JUNE 2009

The Friends of the Pierson Library continue to brainstorm and implement new ways to help our reading (and listening!) patrons of all ages.  For instance, families may take advantage of the various passes we offer to such sites as the e and Montshire Museum, the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Vermont Historical Society Museum, VINS, ECHO, the Fleming Museum at UVM and Rokeby, as well as Vermont State Parks, Vermont Historic sites, the Ethan Allen Homestead and Birds of Vermont.  For some locations, passes are readily available.  For others, there are limited numbers and a first-come/first served system. Some of the venues have become available year-around.
Plans are underway for programs in the fall and winter which include such fascinating topics as “Bats,” from Hands on Nature, “Garbage,” with the Chittenden Solid Waste District, and “Habitats,” with an appropriate presenter.  The Friends are sponsoring a magician to close the summer program season.
The Friends will present bags of books to SCS students who need them, and in cooperation with the SCS library, books on the summer reading list will be available at the Library—just don’t wait until the week before school starts to begin reading!
Have you noticed the floral planters near the entry?  They are thanks to Gardenside Nursery.  And nearer the Fire Station are more fresh plantings, thanks to Board member AJ Humphrey and her family.
The Friends have promised to donate four prizes for the drawing which is planned as part of an adult summer reading program:  a lap quilt from Sally Kalinoski, a copy of her new book—Animal Investigators: How the World’s First Wildlife Forensics Lab is Solving Crimes and Saving Endangered Species--from Laurel Neme, a pair of hand-knit sox from Betsy Dunphy, and a hand-crafted pocket book from Sandi DeShaw.  Check with Katie at the Circulation Desk for latest details.
Gene Schinto and Inger Dybfest continue to box up the books donated by our Friends and patrons—they seem to be coming in more slowly than usual, so look over your bookshelves and see if you have a few you could pass on to others.  The book cart with revolving sales is bringing in about $200 a month, so check the newest additions when you come to the library.  Thanks to all for your continuing support.
