Planning & Zoning Department:

Building permits are needed and available for structural changes to the exterior or interior of your home. Limited home businesses are allowed in most locations and require a Home Occupancy permit. If you have any questions regarding building permits, home occupation permits, or planning and zoning regulations please call either Dean Pierce, Town Planner, at 264.5033 or John Adams, Development Review Board Coordinator at 264-5032.

Zoning permits are issued in accordance with procedures spelled out in state law.   Most permits become effective 15 days after being signed by the Enforcement Officer (unless appealed by someone qualifying as an ‘interested person’).  Permits must be posted in a visible location on the property governed by the permit. However, in most instances, this is the extent of public notice regarding issuance of the permit.  Individuals wishing to stay abreast of permit activity in particular areas of the Town may wish to review files maintained in the Planning and Zoning accessible. In coming months, the Planning and Zoning department will be experimenting with the distribution of this information via a map published on the world wide web.  A sample map depicting standard zoning permits signed in 2011 is available for viewing at this link.   When this map is finalized (meaning it is actively updated with all permits issued on a weekly basis), it will be clearly indicated as such.
